Leeds City Museum is proud to be hosting a major touring exhibition, ‘Pharaoh: King of Egypt’, from The British Museum in 2012.  Featuring over 130 breathtaking objects from the British Museum’s collection, this blockbuster exhibition at Leeds City Museum will explore the different roles of the King of Egypt, as head of state, chief priest and commander of the army.  Marvel at the tomb statue of Ramses I, see unique reliefs and figurines and explore the life and death of the Pharaoh!

The exhibition will touch on themes as diverse as the Pharaoh’s relationship to the gods, festivals, war, and life in the royal court.  Featuring audio visuals, interactives and family trails, this exhibition will be a feast for the senses and a must-see for anyone with an interest in ancient Egypt.

Staged in the amazing Leeds City Museum Arena, this is a major blockbuster show for the whole family and a once in a lifetime opportunity to see all of these fantastic objects in Leeds.

European Figure Skating Championships 2012 at Motorpoint Arena Sheffield

The European Figure Skating Championships 2012 will be held in Sheffield at the Motorpoint Arena from Sunday 22nd until Sunday 29th January 2012.

As England gears up to be the focus of worldwide sporting attention in 2012 for the London Olympic Games, another major event is set to catapult the country into the global limelight.

The ISU European Figure Skating Championships are being held in England for the first time in over 20 years after Sheffield was successful in its bid to stage the prestigious event.

It is the third largest competition involving figure skaters, behind the World Championships and the Winter Olympics.

Nearly 200 skaters from 40 countries, including many Olympians, will take part in the prestigious championship in Sheffield from January 23-29.

Men, Ladies, Pairs and Dance couples will compete.

Celebrate the run up to Christmas at Haworth’s Christmas Festival with six weekends of Victorian inspired Christmas events from mid November.
Here are some of the festival hightlights:

12th – 13th November Scroggling the Holly
The official start of the Christmas Festive Season in Haworth, ‘Scroggleve’ on Saturday sees pixies and fairies spreading pixie dust with holly princes, ivy princesses and attendants handing out decorative springs of holly. Begins 3pm Saturday.

On Sunday bands and Morris Men lead a procession of children up the cobbled Main Street to the crowning on the church steps. The newly crowned Holly Queen unlocks the church gates to invite the spirit of Christmas into Haworth. Santa & Mrs Claus then arrive bringing with them Glad Tidings and Christmas Cheer to all. Procession starts at 3pm on Sunday.

19th – 20th November Haworth Christmas Market
Haworth’s traditional market is on Main Street with stalls selling handmade gifts, confectionary, traditional foods and much much more. Combined with the unique shops in the village and the delightful eateries, shopping at the Christmas market is a wonderful festive. Santa and various entertainments add to the ambience of the weekend.

10th – 11th December Torchlight Weekend
An incredible experience that has become an annual favourite with many visitors to the village. Saturday – Candlemas Eve – Santa & Mrs Claus lead the torchlight procession down Main Street accompanied by the Holly Queen, Morris dancers, choirs, bands. Starts top of Main Street 3pm. Carol singing around Christmas tree at bottom.

Our famous Sunday Torchlight Procession starts at 5.15pm and sees hundreds of torch and lantern bearers along with choirs and bands singing carols, wind their way up from the bottom of the cobbled Main Street to the Parish Church. Please note: the traditional carol service held in the Parish Church is a religious event. Visitors will be strictly monitored and numbers limited. Close of service approximately 7.15pm
